New Milk Depot in De Pere: A Lifeline for NICU Babies

In a heartwarming development for the De Pere community, a new milk depot has opened its doors, offering mothers a compassionate way to support the tiniest and most vulnerable members of our society. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes to provide safe, pasteurized donor milk to infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across Illinois and Wisconsin.

Tracy Hanson, Providence Medford Medical Center's lactation educator, sorts through some of the “liquid gold” breast milk that will be shipped to the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank in Portland for pasteurization, testing and distribution to regional hospitals.

🌟 Why Donated Breast Milk Matters

Breast milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition, especially for premature or medically fragile babies. It provides essential nutrients and antibodies that are crucial for their development and survival. However, not every mother can produce enough milk, which is where donor milk becomes a vital resource.

The De Pere milk depot serves as a collection point for mothers who wish to donate their excess breast milk. Once collected, the milk is transported to the Mothers’ Milk Bank facility in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, where it undergoes rigorous screening and pasteurization to ensure its safety. The processed milk is then distributed to hospitals and healthcare systems to support NICU babies in need.

🏥 How You Can Help

Becoming a donor is a straightforward process:

  1. Contact the Mothers’ Milk Bank: Visit milkbankwgl.org to learn more and begin the donor approval process.

  2. Get Approved: The approval process takes about two weeks and involves a health screening.

  3. Schedule a Drop-off: Once approved, you can contact the De Pere Health Department to arrange a convenient drop-off time.

  4. Donate with Ease: The depot offers a drive-thru service, allowing donors to remain in their vehicles while staff collect the milk.

💖 A Community Effort

This milk depot is more than just a collection point; it’s a testament to the power of community and compassion. As De Pere Deputy Health Officer Sara Lornson aptly stated, “We really want to raise awareness that this program exists, and if there are moms out there that want to donate breast milk that we can help facilitate that.”

Whether you’re a mother looking to donate, a healthcare professional seeking resources, or a community member wanting to support this cause, your involvement can make a world of difference.
