Baby Emma in NICU
At Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes, we are honored to witness stories of courage every day. Among them is the story of Jessica and her daughter, Emma, whose journey reflects the heart of why donor milk matters so deeply in our community.
Jessica shared that Emma’s birth did not begin the way she imagined.
“When my baby was born, we didn’t get the gentle, quiet start I had hoped for,” she told us. “Instead, we were rushed into the world of monitors, wires, and sterile hospital rooms. The PICU became our reality.”
Finding Solace Through Exclusively Pumping

Donor Mom Jessica with Baby Emma
Like so many parents navigating medical uncertainty, Jessica searched for any way to support her fragile newborn. She found it in breast pumping. “I became an exclusive pumper not by choice, but out of sheer determination to give my baby every drop of strength I could offer,” she said. “I pumped through tears. I pumped through fear. I pumped through exhaustion. Even when I couldn’t hold my baby, I could still nourish her.”
As weeks passed and Emma grew stronger, something else grew too: Jessica’s milk supply. Before long, she had more than Emma needed. That is when she chose to extend her love outward, becoming a milk donor for families whose babies also needed support. “I know what it’s like to pray for something, anything, that might help your baby,” Jessica said. “If I could give even one more child a little extra chance, I would.” Her donation not only nourished medically fragile infants, but it also strengthened our community of families who understand the weight of hope, fear, and healing.
Supporting the Community through Breast Milk Donation
At the Milk Bank, we recognize the unseen work behind every donated ounce. Exclusive pumping is hard. The PICU is harder. Yet parents like Jessica show us every day that love is the strongest force of all.
To any parent walking a similar road, Jessica offers this reminder:
“You are not alone. Your effort, your tears, your milk. They all matter more than you know.”
