Hello, my name is Lindsey Asplund, and this is my milk donation story.
When I became a first-time mom, I didn’t do a lot of research on breastfeeding or pumping. All I knew was that I wanted to breastfeed my son. When Mario was born, my journey was challenging because I didn’t know much—but with the help of my lactation consultant, Angie, I persevered. She guided me through the difficulties, and I was eventually able to breastfeed comfortably while also pumping due to an oversupply.
Angie was the one who introduced me to the idea of milk donation. I had no idea this was even possible! Because of her, I learned that I could donate my milk to babies in need. Since Mario was exclusively breastfed, I had an enormous stash of frozen milk that I didn’t want to go to waste. Angie referred me to the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Western Great Lakes, and as soon as I got home, I looked them up and filled out their online application. I received a call within days!
The application process was easy, and every staff member I’ve spoken to has been kind and appreciative. When I had my second son, Daniel, I knew I wanted to donate again. Following the same process, I’ve now donated well over 5,000 ounces!
Knowing my milk is going to babies in need fills me with so much joy.
The milk bank has made donating so accessible—even coming to my house to pick up my milk when I had too much to deliver on my own.
If you’re an overproducer like me and have extra milk you won’t use, I highly recommend donating to the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Western Great Lakes. They truly care about and appreciate their donors.
A huge thank-you to Angie, my lactation consultant, for introducing me to this life-changing opportunity. Without her, I would never have known about the impact milk donation can have. 💜
