Milk Bank to Unveil Medela Human Milk Research Lab During International Donor Milk Conference
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. — On April 20th, the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes (Milk Bank WGL) will unveil its new Medela Human Milk Research Lab to a global audience during the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) International Donor Milk Conference. Over 200 public health delegates are expected to tour Milk Bank WGL’s state-of-the-art facility, located in the heart of Elk Grove Village’s industrial park.
The new laboratory unveiling builds on a partnership between Medela and Milk Bank WGL, two Illinois manufacturers who care deeply about maternal and infant health. Medela leads with research-based breast milk feeding and baby products, alongside healthcare solutions for hospitals in maternity, NICU, wound, and surgical care, as well as clinical education. Milk Bank WGL provides pasteurized donor human milk to premature babies at over 90 hospitals throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. “Our mission has always been rooted in both compassion and science,” said Summer Kelly, Executive Director of Milk Bank WGL. “The Medela Human Milk Research Lab will allow us to deepen our research, and enhance safety and quality to enable us to better serve the most vulnerable babies.”
The Medela Human Milk Research Lab will serve as a hub for scientific exploration and innovation. Equipped with advanced tools for nutritional analysis, immunological testing, and microbiological screening, the lab will contribute to a growing body of knowledge around human milk and infant health. The lab represents a significant investment in advancing the science of milk banking. Dr. Angela Lang, Medela’s Global Director of Medical Affairs & Clinical Education, shared, “the Medela Human Milk Research Lab helps ensure that every drop of donated milk meets the highest standards of quality and safety. By supporting this expansion, we are helping ensure that the tiniest patients have access to the immense benefits of human milk—because every drop counts.”
