For many new parents, the early days of feeding are filled with learning, adjusting, and doing their best to meet their baby’s needs. But for some mothers, an unexpected oversupply of milk opens the door to something extraordinary: the chance to help save the tiniest and most vulnerable babies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

Donor Mom Emily recently shared her story with us.
“I became a first-time mom at the end of April when I welcomed my baby boy, and it’s been such a beautiful, eye-opening journey,” she said. “I started leaking colostrum at just 16 weeks and 3 days pregnant, so I had a feeling I might have a strong milk supply, but I had no idea you could actually donate breast milk until after he was born.”

Exclusively pumping, she quickly realized she was producing far more milk than her baby needed.
“Once I realized I was making way more than my baby needed, I knew I wanted to donate the extra instead of letting it go to waste.”

For NICU families, donor milk is more than nutrition. It is protection. Premature babies have fragile digestive and immune systems, and pasteurized donor human milk can help reduce complications like necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), support their growth, and give parents peace of mind during an incredibly stressful time. Every ounce donated helps fill a critical need.

“I’m so excited to be donating and helping other families, especially babies in the NICU who really depend on donor milk,” she told us. “It feels incredible to know that something so natural can make such a big difference.”

Her story reflects the heart of donor milk banking: one family’s abundance becoming another family’s lifeline. Oversupply can feel overwhelming for new moms, but choosing to donate transforms that challenge into hope, healing, and nourishment for premature and medically fragile infants.

“I think milk banks are absolutely amazing, and I’m proud to be part of something that supports babies when they need it most,” she said. And we are just as proud and grateful for donors like her, mothers who turn their surplus into strength for the smallest among us.
